How To Ensure That Your ‘Google My Business’ Listing Is Ready For The New Lockdown

 In Listings Management

New Year, New….lockdown? Here in Quebec, we’re back in lockdown as of today (Saturday, January 9th), and unfortunately for many small business owners that means a change to how your business is operating. While it’s frustrating (to say the very least), it also means it’s time to once again check your Google My Business listings to make sure all of your information is up to date and reflects your current business model.

Having accurate information and attributes in your Google My Business listing will help current and potential customers know that you’re open for business (if you are), and will also let them quickly and easily see how they can shop from you. If you’ve had to close during the lockdown, you’ll want to make sure people are aware of that, too, in order to prevent any confusion or frustration for your customers.

What you should update to prepare for the lockdown

To keep everything running smoothly, make sure to double-check the following information to ensure your listing is still accurate:

  • Phone Number,
  • Website (is it pointing to the right landing page?),
  • Hours of operation (or, conversely, if you are temporarily closed be sure to mark your business as such), and
  • The address to your physical location, if applicable.

Other considerations

It’s also important to check that the attributes for your business are up-to-date: Are you offering take-out? Curbside pickup? Delivery? This is all-important information that consumers will be looking for, and the easier it is for them to find this information the more likely they are to visit your store or place an online order.

Once you’ve updated your listing’s static information, you may also want to consider creating a post to share, letting your customers know what your COVID-19 protocols and current lockdown situation look like. Are some services temporarily unavailable? Has the process for shopping with you changed? Is hand-sanitizer available? Remember that posts on Google My Business expire, so it’s always a good idea to re-post that information multiple times throughout the lockdown.

Finally, don’t forget to check your Google My Business listing regularly for any questions and/or reviews left by the public. It’s important to answer all questions to show consumers you are active and operational – especially during the lockdown period when many will, unfortunately, be closed. Answering questions and responding to reviews also has the two-fold effect of letting Google know you are active and engaged, which will help increase your listing’s reach and land your business in front of more potential customers.

Of course, you’ll want to make a note to remind yourself to go back in and revert any changes you made after lockdown ends.

If you’re unsure of how to make these changes, or just want someone else to take care of this task for you so you can focus on running your business, send us a message. We’re always happy to help manage your listings (Google My Business and elsewhere) for you.
